TPU Survey 2006
A survey to measure the health and wellbeing of secondary school students attending Teen Parent Units (TPUs) was conducted under the auspices of the Adolescent Health Research Group (AHRG) in 2006. The survey was associated the Youth'07 Project, the second national health and wellbeing survey of secondary school students conducted the following year. Teen Parent Units were developed to enable teen mothers under the age of 20 to continue with their secondary school education. They are funded by the Ministry of Education. Nineteen of the 21 TPUs in the country agreed to take part in the study and 49% (220) of the student population completed the survey questionnaire. The TPU Survey was funded by: Nestle New Zealand through the South Auckland Health Foundation Key findings from the TPU Survey in 2006: - 92% of TPU students reported that their parents or the person who acted as their parent, cared about them a lot
- Nearly all students reported that they enjoyed attending their TPU and 92% felt part of it
- 23% reported that they were happy or satisfied with their lives
- 26% reported depressive symptoms that warranted intervention from a health professional
- 30% had self-harmed themselves in the last 12 months
- 46% used a condom the last time they had sex
- 28% ate breakfast every day
- 9% had done vigorous physical activities in the last week
