Alternative Education (AE) Survey 2009: Identifying health needs and services for young people in alternative education

The goal of this study is to identify health issues for young people in alternative education, and to identify potential strategies for addressing their health needs in the alternative education school.

The specific objectives are:

1. Undertake an international literature review of health service utilisation and provision within the alternative education setting within the last 10 years.

2. Describe the population of young people attending alternative education schools.

3. Identify risk and protective factors for young people attending alternative schools.

4. Explore the healthcare access and provision of services in the alternative education schools.

The alternative education (AE) study will be conducted in a similar fashion to the Youth 07' study, utilising the same technology. The survey questions are similar, but the questions are more specific to young people who attend AE schools. In addition, we will interview AE providers, coordinators and health services associated with AEs to provide us with an understanding of the specific health and social services needed for young people attending these schools. The study will be conducted amongst AE students in the Auckland and Northland region during the 4th term 2009.
