Information for Schools

The results from the second Youth2000 survey conducted in 2007, showed that the majority of the 9,107 students who took part in the survey were positive about school. There were some changes from the first study in 2001.
The following is a brief summary of results:

Most students liked school and this did not vary by age, gender or level of neighbourhood deprivation.
95% of students reported that the most common reason given for enjoying school was hanging out with their friends.
88% of students reported that they felt part of their school and this did not vary by age, gender, level of neighbourhood deprivation or urban/rural background.
About a quarter of students had been truant from school in the past year. This was more common among older students and among students from more deprived neighbourhoods.
Students from neighbourhoods with high levels of deprivation  were less likely to report that teachers treat students fairly most of the time - 41% compared to 53% in areas of low levels of deprivation.
School safety appears to have improved with 84% of students reporting that they felt safe all or most of the time compared to 78% in 2001. However 4% of students reported that they were bullied weekly or more often, although this was a drop of 6% since 2001.

The Youthline Advisory Council wanted schools to be particularly aware that the results highlighted the following:

1. Teachers should be friendly with their students but students do like structure and will respect it
2. Bullying is everyone's responsibility - and it's the staff and the students' job to step in when bullying occurs
3. Teach students 'real life' skills to decrease and relieve stress levels e.g. time management, prioritising and organisational skills
4. Schools could provide breakfast to improve student nutrition.
