Information for Parents

The second Youth2000 health and wellbeing survey was conducted in 2007.  Of the 9,107 secondary school students who took part in the survey from throughout New Zealand, more than 90% reported that they felt their parents cared about them a lot. In fact, students were generally more positive about their family relationships than they were in the first Youth2000 survey conducted in 2001. However, there was a decrease in the number who reported that they got enough time with their parents, from 61% in 2001 to 50% in 2007. The reason most students gave for not getting enough time with their parents was because their parents were working.

More detailed results from this survey are available on this website under Publications.

From the survey results a Youthline Advisory Group identified the following key messages for parents:

  1. Family relationships really influence the wellbeing of young people - a quarter of young people think relationships in their families could  be better.
  2. Communication is paramount; 60% of young people who have been abused haven't told anyone about it.
  3. Communication in families is KEY! The young people were emphatic about the importance of communication between parents and their young people. They argued strongly that better communication eliminates many other issues.
